"Oh my God, we love breakfast for dinner!"
My mother is a gourmet cook and she taught me how to cook when I was 7 years old. Food and cooking have been a passion of my life, throughout my entire life.
I've been talking about owning a restaurant since I was 10.
The goal when we started designing this restaurant was to create something that has a little bit more of a colorful funky urban type atmosphere that you would find in a bigger city like Chicago, where I am from, or San Francisco which is one of my favorite eating cities in the world.
So we wanted to create something that was bright and happy and had a fun energy to it that when people walk in, they kind of say "Wow, we haven't seen something like this in the area before," and I think we've achieved that.
It's still a bit of a work in progress but we're almost there, but we've got really a cool combination of colors and things for the eyes to see. It's definitely something that's a little bit more funky than we've seen in this area.
I tend to think that the 'breakfast for dinner' concept is NOT a trend because everyone I talk to that hears about it says "Oh my God, we love breakfast for dinner!" So it seems like it's a very popular thing and that just not a lot of restaurants do it. Most of the breakfast places close for dinner and so I think there is a void in this community that we are hoping to fill.
My long-term plan is to have somewhere between seven and ten restaurants in this area that will all be underneath a company that I created called the Clean Plate Club Incorporated.
So the Uptown Kitchen is the first one I chose because we have three young children at home and we try to live a fairly healthy active life and when we go out for dinner with our kids, if we're not going out for pasta, its very difficult in this town to get them to eat something that's not deep fried.
